Breast Reduction Surgery Consultation
Board certified plastic surgeons emphasize on patient education with any surgical procedure, such as breast reduction. During the pre-operative consultation, your surgeon will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. If not, they will explore alternative options for meeting your unique needs.
The surgeon will commence with the plastic surgery if they feel that the breast reduction procedure is the most beneficial way of obtaining your aesthetic or functional goals. They will discuss all aspects of the surgery to help you make a well-informed choice. You can be more prepared by knowing what to expect before, during and after the procedure.
Initial Breast Reduction Consultation
The first visit to a plastic surgeon may take 45 minutes. It will include a physical examination and interview. During the interview, the surgeon will discuss your purpose for getting the breast reduction surgery performed. They will ask you what aspects of large breasts bother you and what you hope to achieve.
It is important that you are candid in this interview and mention your concerns regarding cutting bra straps, rashes, and areas of pain. You should let the surgeon know if you are on any pain medication or have taken any physical therapy for alleviating the issues. Your surgeon will also review your medical history for determining whether you are a good candidate.
Your cosmetic surgeon will evaluate the following for the exam part of the consultation:
- Width and height of the breasts
- Width of the ribcage and chest
- Distribution and quality of breast tissue
- Current cup size
- Presence of stretch marks
- Quality of your skin
- Position of the nipple and areola
- Diameter of the areola and nipple
- Potential lumps, cysts, and other masses
The surgeon should be able to determine the extent of breast tissue that needs removal with this information.
Insurance, Costs and Financing Matters
The surgeon’s team will send a letter to the insurance carrier for preauthorizing the procedure. Conversely, you will be provided a quote if you are getting it done for strictly aesthetic reasons. Cosmetic surgery financing options are available for making the breast reduction procedure more affordable.
Final Breast Reduction Procedure Consultation
You may need a second consultation once the surgery has been scheduled for going over the procedure details again. During this consultation, you will understand the procedure details again. The surgeon will ensure that the surgical plan is designed to achieve your unique aesthetic desires.
They will discuss the positioning of the areola, type of incision technique, and your final cup size. The surgeon will also educate you on the benefits, risks, alternatives, and recovery process. You will be given an information packet which will include prescription medications and instructions for pre- and post-operative care.
