RECONSTRUCTION

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure that helps restore the shape and appearance of a breast or breasts after a mastectomy or lumpectomy for breast cancer or other medical reasons. This complex and highly personalized procedure can involve various techniques, including breast implants, tissue expanders, or autologous tissue transfer (using the patient’s own tissue from another part of the body). Breast reconstruction aims to provide physical and emotional healing, allowing women to regain their sense of wholeness and self-confidence after breast cancer surgery. It’s an essential option for many women on their journey toward post-cancer recovery and improved body image.

Diep Flap Breast Reconstruction

The DIEP flap breast reconstruction is a specialized surgical technique used to reconstruct the breast(s) after a mastectomy. It stands for “Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator,” referring to the blood vessels in the lower abdomen that are carefully transferred to the chest to create a natural-looking breast mound. What sets the DIEP flap apart is that it uses the patient’s own tissue (skin and fat) without sacrificing the abdominal muscles, which is a significant advantage over some other reconstruction methods. This approach provides a more natural appearance and often results in a softer and more supple reconstructed breast. Though it’s a more complex procedure than breast implant reconstruction, the DIEP flap is valued for its potential for long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing results.

Mohs Reconstruction

Mohs reconstruction refers to the surgical procedures performed after Mohs micrographic surgery, which is a highly specialized technique for removing skin cancer, particularly in areas where tissue preservation and cosmetic outcomes are essential, like the face. After the removal of skin cancer layers using Mohs surgery, reconstructive surgery is often necessary to repair and restore the affected area. The goal of Mohs reconstruction is to close the wound in a way that minimizes scarring and preserves both the function and aesthetics of the treated area. This may involve techniques such as skin grafts, flaps, or other specialized methods tailored to the patient’s unique needs. Mohs reconstruction plays a vital role in ensuring that patients not only eliminate cancer but also achieve the best possible cosmetic and functional results.

Pre-Pectoral Reconstruction

Pre-pectoral reconstruction is a surgical technique used in breast reconstruction procedures. Unlike traditional subpectoral reconstruction, where breast implants are placed beneath the chest muscle, pre-pectoral reconstruction involves positioning the implant above the chest muscle, directly under the breast tissue. This approach has gained popularity because it often results in a more natural-looking breast shape, reduces post-operative pain, and allows for quicker recovery times. Pre-pectoral reconstruction can be an excellent option for breast cancer survivors or individuals seeking breast augmentation with implants, providing them with a less invasive and aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional reconstruction methods.

Breast Cancer Care

We take a comprehensive approach to supporting individuals diagnosed with breast cancer throughout their journey. It encompasses various medical, emotional, and practical aspects of treatment and recovery. Breast cancer care involves early detection through screenings, accurate diagnosis, personalized treatment plans, which can include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapies, and hormonal therapies, as well as supportive therapies like pain management and physical therapy. Emotional support and counseling are integral components, addressing the psychological and emotional challenges that often accompany a breast cancer diagnosis. Post-treatment care and survivorship programs are also vital, ensuring ongoing monitoring and support for survivors as they work toward regaining their health and quality of life. Breast cancer care aims to provide comprehensive, compassionate, and patient-centered services to improve outcomes and enhance the well-being of those affected by this disease.

Skin Cancer Treatment

Skin cancer treatment involves various medical interventions aimed at removing or treating cancerous growths on the skin. Treatment options depend on the type, size, location, and stage of the skin cancer. Common approaches include surgical excision, Mohs surgery for certain types of skin cancer, radiation therapy, cryotherapy (freezing), topical medications, and photodynamic therapy. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent skin cancer from spreading or becoming more invasive. Skin cancer treatment aims to eradicate cancer cells while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue, and the choice of treatment is individualized based on the patient’s specific condition and medical history. Regular skin checks and sun protection measures are essential for prevention, and treatment success rates are generally high when skin cancer is detected and treated early.

Hernia Reconstruction

Hernia reconstruction is a surgical procedure performed to repair a hernia, which occurs when an organ or tissue protrudes through a weak spot or tear in the abdominal wall. During the reconstruction, the surgeon typically pushes the displaced organ or tissue back into its proper place and reinforces the weakened abdominal wall with sutures or a synthetic mesh to prevent a recurrence. Hernia reconstruction can be performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques or traditional open surgery, depending on the size and complexity of the hernia. It aims to alleviate pain, discomfort, and the risk of complications associated with hernias while promoting a quicker recovery and improved quality of life for the patient.

Transgender Surgery

Transgender surgery, also known as gender-affirming or gender-confirming surgery, refers to a range of medical procedures that transgender individuals may choose to undergo to align their physical appearance with their gender identity. These surgeries can include chest (top) surgery, also known as mastectomy or breast augmentation, and genital (bottom) surgery, such as vaginoplasty or phalloplasty. Additionally, facial feminization or masculinization procedures may be performed to alter facial features. Transgender surgery plays a critical role in alleviating gender dysphoria and helping individuals feel more comfortable and authentic in their bodies. It is often an important component of a broader gender transition process that may also include hormone therapy and psychotherapy. Access to these surgeries can significantly improve the mental and emotional well-being of transgender individuals and is an essential aspect of healthcare for gender diverse individuals.
