Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
In some cases, it is difficult to get rid of the flab or excess fat on the abdominal area despite following a regular exercise and healthy diet routine. This can mean considering a tummy tuck or what doctors refer to as abdominoplasty. It is a cosmetic surgery done for achieving a firmer abdomen with the removal of excess fat around that area. The abdominal muscles tighten once the extra skin and fat is removed. Some of the reasons for getting a tummy tuck could include major weight loss (resulting in sagging abdominal skin) and childbirth. Apart from enhancing the outer appearance of the abdomen, a tummy tuck is also done for the re-establishment of muscles that might have become weak.

Types of abdominoplasty
You can choose from a number of tummy tuck surgeries. However, to get the results closest to your expectations, it is better to ask your plastic surgeon for some tummy tuck before and after photos. Here are some of the options you can choose from:
Complete abdominoplasty: In this type of cosmetic surgery, the abdomen is cut from hip to the hip by the surgeon followed by the contouring of the muscles, skin, tissue and so on. The surgery may involve moving the belly button which means you tubes for drainage may be placed underneath the skin for a couple of days.
Partial abdominoplasty (Mini abdominoplasty): When the fat is mostly collected below the naval, a partial abdominoplasty is done. This procedure is much quicker and can normally be completed within two hours. The detachment of the skin or flab from the lower abdomen (muscle fascia) is done in a more restricted fashion. At times, tightening of the muscle fascia of the abdomen also takes place.
Circumferential abdominoplasty: A circumferential abdominoplasty, as the name suggests, is meant for those patients who also have excess fat or loose skin hanging around their back along with the abdomen. This procedure is also termed as a belt lipectomy or body lift. It is generally recommended to those who have undergone major weight loss.
The total time involved in the abdominoplasty greatly depends on the extent of the fat to be removed and the kind of surgery. Typically an abdominoplasty takes two to three hours while mini abdominoplasty takes about one to two hours.
Tummy tuck procedure
The surgery involves making two incisions. One is made above the pubic region and the other to free the navel. The skin is then separated from the abdominal wall. Once the abdominal muscles are revealed, on the muscles are pulled together to tighten them.
Recovery
Some post-surgery discomfort as well as swelling is quite normal. Any pain that is experienced can easily be treated with medication and the stitches will be removed after 5-7 days of surgery. It could take several weeks for complete and healthy recovery but make sure that you stay away from strenuous activities during this time.
